Apprenticeship Training OpportunitiesDespite our unions’ past success in recruiting and training workers it appears that the construction industry will need a significant influx of new workers in the near future. Nationally, the marketplace will need 185,000 new skilled workers in each of the next ten (10) years. Locally, with demand expected to increase by a 24% over the next seven (7) years the concern is more pronounced. Our unions have a plan in place to address these deficiencies so that their contractors will have the trained personnel to meet the demands of the marketplace. Nationally, this includes an association with the military that enables their members to transition from any branch of the armed forces to building trades craft-training programs through the highly acclaimed Helmets to Hard Hats program. Locally, several of our unions have developed a relationship with YouthBuild Providence, and all of them continually advertise and recruit for new applicants.
